Mallory Weggemann Leads Team USA at World Series stop in Berlin
by Team USA
The 2026 Para Swimming World Series continued in Berlin from May 7-9 as athletes from around the globe gathered for the circuit’s fifth stop of the season. Hosted at the Schwimm- & Sprunghalle im Europasportpark (SSE), the competition featured one of the deepest international fields of the year with close to 400 swimmers representing 60 countries. Great Britain topped the overall medal count with eight gold medals, while Brazil also had several strong performances over the weekend. Team USA returned home with four medals (1 gold, 1 silver, 2 bronzes). The meet followed the World Series multi-class format where swimmers from different classifications compete together, and final placements are determined by a points system.
A 13-athlete roster for the U.S. was highlighted by podium finishes from Mallory Weggemann, Leanne Smith and Olivia Chambers. Weggemann secured a gold medal for Team USA in the women’s 200-meter individual medley (SM5-14) after finishing in a tie for first with Great Britain’s Olivia Newman-Baronius. The four-time Paralympian also earned bronze in the women’s 50-meter butterfly (S2-7) and added a fifth-place result in the women’s 50-meter freestyle (S1-13). Smith claimed silver in the women’s 150-meter individual medley (SM1-4), while Chambers secured bronze in the women’s 200-meter individual medley (SM5-14).
Additional strong performances for Team USA included a pair of fourth-place finishes from Lizzi Smith in the women’s 100-meter butterfly (S8-14) and women’s 100-meter backstroke (S1-2, 6-14). Grace Nuhfer finished fifth in the women’s 100-meter freestyle (S1-14) and women’s 400-meter freestyle (S6-14). The World Series circuit will resume later this month with the next stop scheduled May 29-31 in Fuji-Shizuoka, Japan.
